UX/UI DESIGN, 2016

Quantac is a startup that has created a technology that can measure your Blood Alcohol Content through a sensor device. Tally is the application I designed for them that allows users to track their drinking habits with or without the device.

problem

Keeping track of one's alcohol consumption can be a difficult task. Whether one seeks to count their drink consumption as a curious endeavor or for health reasons, this information can prove valuable.

Create a efficient way to allow users to log their drinking activity using both the data from the wearable sensor as well as information manually logged through the application

personas

Carl the Curious

Carl is a casual user who doesn't own the Quantac bracelet, but wants to give a try at logging his alcohol consumption to see what his results are. He uses the app when he remembers and needs something simple enough so he doesn't lose interest in the middle of logging his information. As he is only looking for weekly approximations of his drinking habits, he gravitates towards following the pre-measured drinks. 

Penelope the Precise

Penelope is in a fitness kick and trying to lose weight. She realizes that the bulk of her weight loss will coming from cutting down on beer. She does not need to know her Blood Alcohol Content at all times, but wants a precise logging of the calories she consumes through drinking. Penelope wants her data to be as accurate as possible so she usually manually inputs her drink and chooses from the database of nutritional information of different beers.

Anton the Athlete 

Anton is a student athlete with a bad record of being on academic probation for getting caught drinking. He is a valuable asset to the team, but his heavy drinking can often get in the way of his early morning practices. As a result, his coach makes a deal with Anton that he can remain on the team if he wears the Quantac bracelet at all times. Anton often fails to log in his drinks, however, his connected sensors logs his blood alcohol content and automatically records average drinks based off this data.

The first set of images contains the new user pages where the user puts in the needed information. I wanted these pages to be as clear and straightforward as possible so that the user would not need to put in a lot of work into creating an account.

The next set of images contains the New Drink pages. Here the user can enter in a drink that they are having. Through these pages, the app can track the estimated BAC of the user and can also keep a log of drinks. The user first chooses to add a drink and then chooses the type (wine, beer, hard alcohol, mixed drink). Once the single drink type has been chosen, the other types fade out to respond to the user's chosen drink type. Then the liquid currently in the icon empties out and fill up to the amount the user has chosen. The storyboards included below, the user has chosen a standard drink, so the drink only fills half the glass.

The third set of images contain the graphs that hold the user's drinking data. There are panels for weekly, monthly and annual drinking. They contain a graph of the drinks the user has had for a certain week, month and year. Each page lists the cumulative average of daily drinks to that day and also lists the daily drinks, daily calories and total drink count for the period (week, month, year) the user is currently viewing. In the week-viewing mode, if the user taps on a certain day, they can see a map for that day. It maps a schedule of the day and placed a logo at time when a drink was logged. If the user hovers over the Quantac logo, you can get the precise time. If the user taps on a certain week of a mont, or a certain month of a year, they will be brought to the week-viewing mode or month-viewing mode for that period.
